5th International Short Film Festival of Cyprus

The 5th International Short Film Festival of Cyprus opens its doors to images and narratives of cinema, in the framework of a unique cinematic experience, at Rialto Theatre from the 17th to the 23rd October.


With over one hundred short fiction, documentary, experimental and animated films from across the world, the Festival showcases selected works of Cypriot and international filmmakers, promoting their work and offering the Cypriot audience a chance to enjoy some of the best short films from around the globe. Moreover, it is a platform for communication, interaction and film education as it hosts young and acclaimed film professionals in an exchange of ideas and cinematographic creation. The main programme is enhanced with masterclasses, thematic tributes and other events.


The International Jury is made up of acclaimed film professionals who will decide upon the awards: 1st Prize for Best Short Film, Best Director Award, 2nd Prize for Best Short Film, 1st Prize for Best National Film, 2nd Prize for Best National Film, Best Documentary Award, Student Jury Award for Best Music Video. Moreover, three film companies - MS Viewpoint Ltd, Full Moon and Sklavis Film Lab- offer awards accompanied by production and post production services to three Cypriot films. 


The selection of films and programming of screenings and parallel events, is undertaken by the artistic committee, consisting of film directors Alexia Roider and Ioakim Mylonas.


Five Years in Action!


This year, the ISFFC celebrates its fifth year in action as an international competition festival, and promises to amaze audiences with its unique programme. Everybody remembers last year’s opening presenting the 3D Mapping technique, which brought  out the third dimension. The Rialto Theatre building was transformed, through the use of image and sound projected on its surface! This year, the ISFFC prepares another 3D Mapping show, which is planned to be longer in duration and with different aesthetics and visuals.

International Competition Programme: 57 international films will compete in this section



Τhe ISFFC goes… 3D!


This year the ISFFC goes 3D, focusing on the new tendency in cinema making. For the first time in Cyprus, we will have the chance to enjoy short films that explore 3D. The Festival will give out 3D glasses inviting everyone to a unique three dimensional one hour experience, curated by Björn Speidel, Filminstitut, UdK-Berlin. The screening will take place at Rio Cinema, Limassol, on October 21st, 7p.m..


Parallel Programmes of Screenings

This year, the parallel programmes of screenings will take us on a journey from the reality of Africa, to the rhythms of dance films and music videos and the wonders of animation and science fiction. The following programmes will be showcased:


  • Amaze me, For the third year running, a competition programme with top notch music videos from around the world is presented, judged by students from the School of Fine and Applied Arts, of the Cyprus University of Technology


  • Maisha Film Lab, a selection of African shorts from the Maisha Film Laboratory for East Africans, a non profit organisation aiming at offering practical education to young filmmakers and the means to produce films through which the rich tradition and history of Uganda is expressed. The programme is curated by Fibby Kioria.

  • Aspects of the Fantastic: Best of Countryside Animafest Cyprus: A selection of the best animation shorts which have been screened and awarded at the 14th edition of Countryside Animafest Cyprus 2015. Curated by Yiorgos Tsaggaris.


  • Dancing in Film: A programme dedicated to films depicting dance as their main theme. Whether experimental, documentary, fiction or musical, these shorts portray dancing not only as a means of expression and communication but also as the protagonist who tells the story of the film.


  • Cyprus Comic Con: A selection of short films on the theme of the fantastic (science fiction, horror, thriller etc.), which were screened at Cyprus Comic Con this year. Cyprus Comic Con is the biggest pop-culture event on the island, showcasing comic book related art. Curated by Andreas Kyriakou



ISFFC is honoured with ΕFFE Label


As one of Europe’s finest festivals, the ISFFC was honoured with the EFFE Label 2015-2016 (Europe for Festivals, Festivals for Europe), a certificate of excellence and quality recognised across Europe.

EFFE – Europe for Festivals, Festivals for Europe, is the portal for citizens and for professionals to discover and get involved in Europe’s festivals.  It is a new international festival platform connecting festivals that are deeply committed to the arts, their communities and European values. Above all EFFE recognizes the immense excellence of these festivals in their daily local work all across Europe.



The Festival is organised by the Cultural Services of the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Rialto Theatre.
